{"id":47,"date":"2011-01-22T18:58:15","date_gmt":"2011-01-23T00:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/?p=47"},"modified":"2011-02-03T18:59:48","modified_gmt":"2011-02-04T00:59:48","slug":"tintern-to-worcester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/?p=47","title":{"rendered":"Tintern to Worcester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a fairly &#8220;cool&#8221; night at the <a title=\"Tintern Abbey Hotel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tinternabbeyhotel.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tintern Abbey Hotel<\/a> (I am beginning to believe that many places turn the heat off at 11:00 PM), we awoke to a fairly chilly room, and what you might charitably call a &#8220;warm&#8221; shower after letting the water run for about 10 minutes.\u00c2\u00a0 There were only three couples in the hotel, judging from what we saw at breakfast, and we were all put in a far wing of the hotel.\u00c2\u00a0 We DID have a fantastic view of the abbey ruins from our room, so we did have that going for us.\u00c2\u00a0 This hotel didn&#8217;t seem to have point-of-use type water heaters for the bathroom, so the hot water may very well have been on the other side of the hotel.\u00c2\u00a0 Since the room heat (radiator) and hot towel rack (in the bathroom &#8211; also a radiator-type appliance) use water through their systems, we never really got warmed up until we went down for breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>On the subject of breakfast, it would help to understand that a &#8220;<a title=\"Full English Breakfast at Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Full_breakfast#Full_English_breakfast\" target=\"_blank\">full English breakfast<\/a>&#8221; consists of a couple of courses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Starter (fruit and\/or juice) course<\/li>\n<li>Cereal course<\/li>\n<li>Main course<\/li>\n<li>Tea with Milk<\/li>\n<li>Toast<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The main course generally has included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eggs (actually, unless you specify, you typically get one fried egg, sunny-side up; over-easy can be a challenge in the UK)<\/li>\n<li>Bacon (served more like a ham slice than what &#8216;mericans would consider bacon)<\/li>\n<li>Sausage of some type<\/li>\n<li>Fried or grilled tomatoes<\/li>\n<li>Fried mushrooms<\/li>\n<li>Baked beans<\/li>\n<li>Toast<\/li>\n<li>Tea or coffee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think we have both avoided the tomatoes and beans, but they have been available at nearly every breakfast we have been offered.\u00c2\u00a0 I guess this might explain the fascination The Who seemed to have with baked beans (<a title=\"The Who Sell Out\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Who_Sell_Out\" target=\"_blank\">The Who Sell Out<\/a> album cover featured it, as did the <a title=\"Ann Margaret in Tommy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k8T1ZR98aEA\" target=\"_blank\">rock opera Tommy<\/a> &#8211; at about the 4:05 mark, Ann Margaret is covered with baked beans.) There have been some other items offered at times.\u00c2\u00a0 Hog pudding, black pudding, and fried bread have been available at one time or another.<\/p>\n<p>The breakfast at the Tintern Abbey Hotel was especially yummy, for some reason.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps it was the hog pudding (kind of like sausage, but not quite &#8211; I also had regular sausage, which was bland compared to the hog pudding).<\/p>\n<p>After eating breakfast, loading up the car and chatting with the front desk manager for a bit, we walked over to <a title=\"Tintern Abbey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tintern_Abbey\" target=\"_blank\">the abbey<\/a> which was covered in morning frost.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-48\" title=\"Tintern Abbey in Morning Frost\" src=\"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0016-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0016-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0016-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of Tintern Abbey in the morning frost. There was even something coming out of the sky - we weren&#39;t sure if it was snow, sleet or rain.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The abbey was founded in the year AD 1131.\u00c2\u00a0 Portions of this fabulous building that remain were begun in the year AD 1136.\u00c2\u00a0 Read that again &#8211; the building of the abbey began in the year of our Lord One Thousand One Hundred Thirty Six!\u00c2\u00a0 It was the first Cistercian abbey in Wales, and only the second in all of Britain.\u00c2\u00a0 The monastery lasted for 400 years, until the <a title=\"Dissolution of the Monasteries\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries\" target=\"_blank\">Dissolution of the Monasteries<\/a> was enacted by <a title=\"King Henry VIII\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_VIII_of_England\" target=\"_blank\">King Henry VIII<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The internal ruins have a stark beauty, made even more memorable by the cold, misty morning that we got to visit.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0068.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49\" title=\"Tintern Abbey Internal View\" src=\"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0068-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0068-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0068-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0068.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The view from the Presbytery toward the West Front of Tintern Abbey.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After about an hour of visiting the abbey and a stop in the gift shop, we made for the motorway to go back over the <a title=\"River Severn\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Severn\" target=\"_blank\">River Severn<\/a> and into England.\u00c2\u00a0 Cirencester would be our next stop.<\/p>\n<p>The town of <a title=\"Cirencester\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cirencester\" target=\"_blank\">Cirencester<\/a> was known as <a title=\"Corinium Dobunnorum - Cirencester in Roman Times\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corinium_Dobunnorum\" target=\"_blank\">Corinium Dobunnorum<\/a> during Roman times.\u00c2\u00a0 We visited the <a title=\"Corinium Museum in Cirencester\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cotswold.gov.uk\/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=1569\" target=\"_blank\">Corinium Museum<\/a> there, which has some fantastic Roman-era mosaics on display, along with a time-line of the history of the <a title=\"The Costwolds\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cotswolds\" target=\"_blank\">Cotswolds<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 The displays were well done, and the museum an absolute delight to visit.\u00c2\u00a0 The amount of Roman artifacts on display is truly phenomenal.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0179.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50\" title=\"The Hunting Dogs Mosaic\" src=\"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0179-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0179-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/trip2011.kkengel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DSC_0179-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-50\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Hunting Dogs Mosaic at the Corinium Museum in Cirencester.
